In the state of Michigan, a License to Purchase (LTP) is required to acquire a pistol if individuals lack a CPL (Concealed Pistol License), MCOLES (issued to law enforcement), or FFL (Federal Firearms License). This blog post clarifies the LTP process and the role a notary public plays in ensuring a smooth and legal transaction.


The Importance of a Notary in the LTP Application


The LTP application involves a sworn statement signed under oath, confirming the applicant

meets all the qualifications for purchasing a pistol in Michigan. A notary public verifies the

applicant's identity and witnesses the signature on the sworn statement.


LTP Eligibility Requirements


Before applying for an LTP, applicants must meet the following criteria:


• Be at least 18 years old (federal law requires 21 years for handguns from licensed

dealers).

• Be a legal resident of Michigan with a valid ID (driver's license or state ID).

• Pass a background check to confirm eligibility.

• Not have any disqualifying factors, including felony convictions, certain

misdemeanors, restraining orders, or others.


Step-by-Step Guide to Obtaining an LTP


1. Application: Visit your local police department or sheriff's office to obtain an LTP

application.

2. Completion: Fill out the application accurately and truthfully.

3. Sworn Statement Signing: A notary public will verify your identity and witness your

signature on the sworn statement.

4. Application Submission: Pay any required fees and submit the completed

application to the issuing authority.

5. Background Check: Undergo a background check to verify eligibility.

6. Approval Wait: There may be a waiting period while the background check is

processed.

7. Purchase: Once approved, the LTP is valid for 30 days, allowing you to complete

your pistol purchase within this timeframe.

8. Post-Purchase: After acquiring the firearm, return the completed LTP form to the

issuing authority within 10 days.


Firearm Safety Comes First


While not mandatory for the LTP, completing a firearm safety course is highly recommended

before purchasing a pistol. Responsible gun ownership begins with proper knowledge and

training.
